Project Overview

Triangle Innovation Point is an industrial and advanced manufacturing park in central North Carolina. It spans more than 400 acres. A new electric vehicle manufacturing facility required water and sewer services in order to build and operate. This project—spearheaded by the local municipality—intended to provide sufficient service for the facility and surrounding parcels planned for future development.

What did the Triangle Innovation Point project plans for water and sewer services include?

  • 30 miles of HDPE and ductile iron pipe
  • Valves, fittings, and precast manholes
  • Additional PVF for one new pump station and one rehabilitated pump station
  • New yard piping for two existing pump stations

Challenges

Like many large water and sewer projects, Triangle Innovation Point faced tight deadlines, pricing instability, and complex logistics.

The 30-mile water and sewer service project with four pump stations faced challenges, such as:

Tight Schedules
The project was on a critical schedule because the water and sewer service had to be functioning before the factory was ready to begin operations. Delays in commencing service would prevent the factory from starting vehicle production, impacting thousands of jobs and the manufacturer’s bottom line.

Complicated Logistics
With each mile of pipe and each pump station included in the plans, the complexity and geographical scope of the project grew. Multiple subcontractors and Ferguson were engaged during preconstruction to facilitate the tight timeline. Comprehensive project management would be critical to ensuring all aspects of the project were completed correctly and on schedule.

Stringent Budgets
The project was in preconstruction towards the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. At this point, supply chain and volatility concerns were top of mind. Market fluctuations meant unstable pricing, which led to uncertainties surrounding budget constraints and material availability.

How did Ferguson’s strategic infrastructure project management team reduce setbacks and coordinate efforts for Triangle Innovation Point?

Engaging our collaborative Strategic Infrastructure delivery team and integrated Waterworks Supply Chain Procurement Specialist model, we consolidated coordination efforts, streamlined supply, controlled cost, and provided valuable expert insights.

Working with Ferguson Waterworks for water and wastewater projects, clients receive:

  • Full lifecycle support for large-scale projects
  • Dedicated design-build and construction manager at-risk (CMAR) teams
  • Strong expertise in waterworks materials and supply chain procurement
  • Close relationships with water and sewer service product manufacturers and vendors

What was our step-by-step approach as a strategic infrastructure project management partner?

We deployed a two-pronged approach to help streamline this project: our Strategic Infrastructure Collaborative Delivery Team and our integrated collaborative delivery engagement model (or Waterworks Supply Chain Procurement Specialist). As a result of these solutions, we provided a host of products and services.

What solutions does Ferguson Waterworks offer for strategic infrastructure projects?

  • Value engineering
  • Constructability reviews
  • Risk mitigation
  • Schedule reviews
  • Site utilization plan reviews
  • DBE participation
  • BIM modeling from our Virtual Design & Construction team
  • Additional pre-construction services
  • Pump station and conveyance expertise and products

What does Ferguson’s Strategic Infrastructure Collaborative Delivery Team provide?

Our strategic infrastructure project management team focuses exclusively on CMAR and design-build work. Therefore, these associates are dedicated to understanding the nuances of collaborative delivery. This includes supplier expectations, how the preconstruction process flows, stakeholders’ expectations, and how to use this information for project success.

How do we support infrastructure projects with our Waterworks Supply Collaborative Delivery Engagement Model?

Ferguson Waterworks’ innovative, integrated, collaborative delivery engagement model, termed Waterworks Supply Chain Procurement Specialist (WSCPS), is exclusive to Ferguson. Our customers gain access to dedicated resources for all project goals— beginning with pre-construction and continuing to project completion.

THE SOLUTION: FERGUSON WATERWORKS

With our delivery experts leading the way, we provided a comprehensive, start-to-finish project partnership. The collective expertise of our Strategic Infrastructure associates enabled us to serve in a consultative role, providing input and ideas wherever our expertise overlapped with the customers’ scope. We leveraged our close relationships with multiple PVF vendors to help evaluate pipeline material options. The owner ultimately switched materials, saving $25M and six months of lead time.

Early involvement and strategic, integrated procurement offer more than large savings.

We provided material to all utility and process subcontractors on the project. Our vast inventory and efficient distribution network consolidated most of the project’s material needs to one supplier. As a result, minimizing submittals, paperwork, and coordination efforts in the field. We also facilitated orders across subcontractors for improved estimation, schedule guarantees, variable control, and manufacturer bonding.

Our large-scale project expertise and creative problem-solving mitigated risk and enabled us to complete the project on time and on budget. ShearForce 10 installed beneath and around operational solar panels in order to prevent erosion.

With solar panels in place and operational, an immediate and effective erosion control solution was imperative. Especially considering the panels were positioned next to channels, drip lines, and spillways.
