The Vaughan Pump handles the increased non-dispersible items clogging the Harmon Field Pump Station
Templeton & Associates, a Ferguson partner and process equipment manufacturer representative, supplied the Vaughan Pump to handle increased levels of non-dispersible items entering the pump station.

Project Background
Since 1985, the City of Canton, GA, has had a dry pit pump station. Originally, they used conventional dry pit pumps with extended shafts to motors located on an intermediate level. Approximately 5 years ago, however, those pumps were replaced with dry pit submersible pumps. They worked well…until recently.
Challenge
Due to the ever-growing flushing of non-dispersible items (baby wipes, shop rags, disposable diapers, etc.), the pump station started experiencing clogging issues. Eventually, the volume of non-dispersible items overwhelmed the pump’s ability to pass them. As a result, it caused both the pumps and the switchgear to burn out. In order to maintain the station when it clogged, maintenance personnel unbolted the suction piping flange from the pump suction flange so they could reach the impeller to unclog the pump. This procedure took several hours and was more frequently required.
David Hatabian, Utilities Engineer and Reservoir Manager for the City, approached us with his problem and asked if a Vaughan pump would be a good retrofit solution for his application.
Solution
David showed us the pictures of the large volume of non-dispersible items he pulled out of the pumps. The challenge was on, and Vaughan Pump was ready to perform! The Vaughan’s impeller and wet end chopping action present a unique advantage. So much so, it provided the reliable solution the city needed.
Ferguson Waterworks partners with premier process equipment manufacturer representatives like Templeton & Associates to support pump stations.
The City contracted Willow Construction to retrofit the station with Vaughan pumps. After a successful retrofit, the pumps operated nicely. The material that flows to the pump station and enters the pumps’ wet end is easily chopped and passed through the pump. As a result, eliminating maintenance man-hours once required to clean the clogged pumps. Now, maintenance personnel can spend their time elsewhere in the collection system.
