Project Overview
The Tri-Town Water District serves the drinking water for several Massachusetts communities. Randolph, Holbrook, and Braintree municipalities highly anticipated the new Tri-Town Regional Water Treatment Plant. In fact, constructing the state-of-the-art 12.5 MGD (million gallons per day) water treatment facility was vital to community infrastructure.
To get started, the team required a detailed water treatment plant model. Specifically, a model outlining the chemical feed piping as well as anchor and support locations to facilitate installation. In addition to the virtual design and construction model, the client needed an accurate bill-of-materials (BOM) in order to quote and procure the water treatment plant PVF and equipment. At the time, the customer didn’t have the resources to dive into the chemical feed piping.
Challenge
Ultimately, the customer needed precise 3D models for the new water treatment facility. However, this level of detail was beyond their in-house capabilities. Furthermore, they required a team to integrate the facility’s model into their federated project file so that all teams could collaborate in sync. In addition, they wanted a lump-sum model-based estimate that was transparent for all parties involved and limited excess or waste in the process. Lastly, they desired a partner to help relieve some of their management limitations and capacity to dive into the chemical feed piping.
Solution
We leveraged our skills and knowledge to provide intricate and accurate VDC modeling services. To begin, we created a BIM (Business Information Model) for the chemical feed piping system. This model supplies a detailed visual for the entire process. Furthermore, it outlines other systems, such as MEP, for the field crews to avoid.
Before mobilizing, we clearly indicated the locations of anchors, supports, and pipe routing. This enabled a more precise planning and execution workflow. Furthermore, with effective communication in place, teams remained updated and on the same page. This was marked by early deliverables, effective information exchanges, and a client-focused approach.
